Making a decision is a pretty powerful thing we get to do. God gave us the ability to choose, and that’s powerful because that means to change our lives, we only have to decide that we will and then take actions that align with our decision.
Clarity is a game changer. When you want to change your life and don’t do anything different to change it, you’re either not clear on what you want, so you do nothing, or there’s a belief there that’s keeping you from moving forward.
You have to decide what matters. Just like the earth has seasons, we have different seasons in life. What matters to you in this season may not matter at all in your next season. Realizing that allows you to plan your life accordingly and make the necessary adjustments without the associated guilt or shame.
You have to assess where you are right now and what you’re realistically able to do to work towards your goals in the season that you’re in. Otherwise, you’ll end up overextending yourself and setting misaligned goals.
I was notorious for doing this. I created daily to-do lists with more tasks than I had time for. I set goals that were so ambitious that I would burn out within two weeks of starting. Then I would beat myself up so badly when I didn’t get all my tasks done or when I didn’t reach my over-ambitious goals. It was ridiculous. Unnecessary pressure that I’d put on myself.
I made some of the same mistakes when setting goals for losing weight, exercising, fasting, and scheduling devotional time – the list goes on. I was approaching goal planning all wrong, and I had to learn how to manage my ambitions. Thankfully, I had a strong why to keep me moving forward when I felt like giving up.
If you feel you’re busy going nowhere, I want you to think about what’s important to you right now. Why does living in alignment matter to you? Why do you need to shift now?
Write your answers down on paper or save them on your phone so you can revisit them and keep them top of mind. Gaining greater clarity is progress – and progress is movement. Get in motion!
